The history of the "coffer" has two main meanings: a furniture chest and an architectural sunken panel. As a chest, the term dates to the Middle Ages for a portable container to store valuables and goods, evolving from simple, sturdy wooden boxes to more elaborate pieces. As an architectural element, coffers originated in Ancient Greece and Rome to lighten stone ceilings, and this technique was revived during the Renaissance and is still seen today in designs like coffered ceilings.

Coffer as a furniture chest

Medieval origins: The word comes from the Latin "cophinus," meaning "basket". Early coffers were simple, durable wooden boxes, often made of oak, used by most households for storing everything from money and documents to clothes and food. They served as a family's safe before banks were common.

Evolution of design: Over time, coffers gained hinges, locks, and later, more advanced features like "tills" (interior compartments) and hidden spaces for valuables. The introduction of paneled construction in the 1500s made them more durable and less prone to cracking.

Decoration: Decoration varied widely, from simple, undecorated styles to painted, gilded, or carved surfaces. Brass-headed nails were often used to outline patterns or the owner's initials.

Dual purpose: Besides storage, coffers served multiple functions, such as a seat, a surface for working, or even a table.

Later developments: The "mule chest" was a variation with drawers below the main chest, and the rise of the cedar chest in the late 19th and early 20th centuries further expanded their use in the home.

Coffer as an architectural feature

Ancient origins: The earliest surviving examples are stone coffers from Ancient Greece and Rome, which were originally developed to reduce the weight of heavy stone ceilings. The Pantheon in Rome is a famous example.

Early technique: The technique likely started with wooden beams in a grid pattern before being used in stone.

Renaissance and beyond: The use of coffers was revived during the Renaissance and became common in Baroque and Neoclassical architecture. Sir Christopher Wren used them extensively in his London churches.

Function and aesthetics: In architecture, a coffer is a sunken square or polygonal panel used to decorate a ceiling or vault. These can be called caissons or lacunaria.

    July 2025

Great item, was a glass jar with contents, well packaged, with a fragile label attached, arrived no problems. A near perfect example of a 50s/60s Hopkin and Williams chemical bottle. The postage was fair, the item was as described and a good value, especially with contents.
