A wonderfully characterful vintage handmade bird cage, full of rustic charm, timeworn texture and folk-art appeal.

Measuring approximately 38cm tall x 22cm in diameter, this unusual decorative cage has a beautifully primitive domed form, constructed from bent wood, aged wirework and rope-wrapped upper ribs.

The piece has a lovely sculptural presence, with its weathered wooden hoops, rusted metal bars, wrapped cord detailing and simple handmade hook fastening. Inside is a small fixed feeder or water cup, adding to its authenticity and charm.

The cage has a wonderful aged surface throughout, with traces of old paint, natural wear, rust, fraying and irregularities that speak to its handmade construction and long life.

This is not a polished factory-made cage, but a much more soulful vernacular piece. It has the feel of a traditional folk-made songbird cage, possibly North African, Moroccan, Tunisian or Mediterranean in style, though its exact origin is unknown. The combination of wood, wire and rope gives it a beautifully rustic decorative quality, ideal for interiors with a love of texture, history and the imperfect beauty of age.

Condition

In authentic vintage condition, with considerable age-related wear throughout. There is rusting to the wirework, fraying and darkening to the rope wrapping, surface wear to the wooden frame, old paint remnants, bends, losses, marks and general irregularities consistent with age and handmade construction.

These signs of age are part of the appeal and give the piece its wonderfully atmospheric, timeworn character.
