A wonderfully characterful vintage glass whisky bottle modelled in the unmistakable form of a Scottish thistle.

The rounded flower head is covered with a bold moulded diamond-lattice pattern, creating plenty of sparkle and texture. Beneath it, the glass narrows into an elegant fluted stem before spreading into a substantial rectangular foot. The stepped neck retains an old natural cork stopper, completing its appealing traditional appearance.

This unusual bottle would originally have held Scotch whisky or another spirit and is now a fabulous piece of Scottish barware and social history. Empty decorative spirit bottles of this type are increasingly sought after for home bars, drinks cabinets and whisky-themed interiors. It would also make a rather splendid bud vase or purely decorative display piece.

Dating and maker history

I would conservatively date the bottle to the early-to-mid 20th century, probably around the 1920s–1950s. It appears to be commercially moulded glass rather than hand-cut lead crystal.

No maker’s name or factory mark is visible, there is a mark on the base so the manufacturer should be recorded as unknown. It would be unwise to describe it as Edinburgh Crystal without a signature, label or documented provenance.

The design does, however, belong to a long Scottish glassmaking tradition. Edinburgh Crystal became particularly famous for its thistle-shaped glassware, with its celebrated Thistle pattern recorded as being produced from the late 19th century and subsequently appearing across decanters and drinking glasses. Your bottle is best described as being in the Scottish thistle tradition, rather than attributed directly to that factory.

Condition

The bottle is offered in authentic vintage condition, with surface marks, scratches, small bubbles and manufacturing irregularities visible within the glass. There is some cloudiness, residue and discolouration around the underside and lower interior.

The cork is heavily aged, dry and deteriorated, with cracking and small losses, so it should be considered decorative rather than reliably airtight. It may not be the bottle’s original stopper.

No obvious major chips or cracks can be seen in the photographs, although the images should be examined carefully as part of the condition description.
