Tiny Vintage Columbia “Talkie” Gramophone Needle Tin Art Deco Music Collectible
Tiny Vintage Columbia “Talkie” Gramophone Needle Tin – Art Deco Music Collectable – c.1920s/1930s
A wonderfully tiny piece of early sound-recording history, this vintage Columbia “Talkie” Needles tin once held steel gramophone needles for playing 78 rpm records.
Measuring approximately 5cm in length, it is a charming miniature survivor from the age of wind-up gramophones, shellac records and the excitement of the first “talking pictures”.
The front of the tin is beautifully decorative, with a striking black, gold and turquoise Art Deco-style design, complete with fan-like motifs and a central musical note. The wording reads:
“200 Talkie / Columbia ‘Talkie’ Needles / Use Each Needle Once Only”
That final instruction is a lovely piece of social history. Early steel gramophone needles were designed for short-term use, often just a single record side or play, as a worn needle could damage the delicate grooves of shellac records. Small tins like this would have been a practical everyday accessory in homes where music was played on gramophones.
The use of the word “Talkie” places this firmly in the interwar period, when sound cinema was new and exciting. The Columbia name also connects it to one of the great names of early recorded music and gramophone history. Though small in size, this little tin carries a wonderful sense of the 1920s and 1930s music room.
The tin is now empty and offered as a decorative collectable. It shows plenty of honest age-related wear, including scratches, rubbing, tarnishing, losses to the printed finish and darker oxidation around the sides and edges.
The back is plain gold-toned metal with surface wear and patina. The printed lid remains attractive and readable, giving the piece a lovely aged character.
A delightful addition to a collection of vintage tins, gramophone memorabilia, Art Deco ephemera, music collectables or early cinema-related display pieces.
