Vintage Gateway Building Society Junior Savers Club Tin Money Box – 1970s/1980s
this is a charming piece of late 20th-century financial advertising and children’s savings history.
Vintage Gateway Building Society Junior Savers Club Tin Money Box
9 cm tall
8 cm square
A wonderfully nostalgic Gateway Building Society “Junior Savers Club” tin money box, produced as a promotional children’s savings tin, likely dating from the late 1970s to 1980s. These tins were given to young savers to encourage the habit of putting away pocket money, often with the building society retaining or providing the key so that savings could be deposited into a child’s account.
This example has a bright yellow ground with lively circus-style illustrations, including clowns, flags, stars, and a large Gateway Building Society balloon motif. The top has the original coin slot and bold red Gateway logo, while the base also carries the Gateway Building Society branding. It is a lovely piece of social history, evoking a period when banks and building societies actively marketed saving to children through clubs, passbooks, badges and novelty money boxes.
Gateway Building Society itself was formed in 1974, when Bedfordshire Building Society and Temperance Permanent Building Society came together under the Gateway name. It later transferred to Woolwich Equitable Building Society in 1988, and the Woolwich name followed in 1990. This gives the tin a relatively neat collecting window, most likely c.1970s–1980s.
Condition is very much part of its vintage appeal: there is age-related surface wear, darkening, rubbing to the edges and lid, small marks, scratches and signs of use throughout. The colours and graphics remain attractive and display well. No key is present.
A great little collector’s piece for anyone interested in vintage advertising tins, building society memorabilia, children’s savings items, banking history, circus-themed graphics or 1970s/1980s nostalgia.
