A wonderfully quirky piece of aviation salvage, this striking vintage airfield light brings together bold industrial design, rich colour and a proper sense of airport history.

With its vivid cobalt blue glass dome, golden yellow metal body and chunky utilitarian fittings, this is the sort of object that instantly tells a story. Originally designed for use around an airfield taxiway, apron or aviation ground route, lights of this type helped guide aircraft safely while moving on the ground, particularly at night or in poor visibility. Blue lighting is traditionally associated with taxiway edge marking, making this a fascinating little survivor from the world of airport ground operations.

This example has a fantastic sculptural form. The rounded blue glass lens sits proudly within a heavy yellow-painted metal housing, supported on a short stem with a broad circular fixing plate. The finish has just the right amount of honest wear: paint losses, knocks, scuffs and surface marks from its working life, all adding to its authentic industrial appeal. It has that irresistible “small object, big job” quality — a functional item from a highly specialised environment, now transformed by age and context into a brilliant decorative talking point.

The style is very much in keeping with ATG / Alstom ZA216-type elevated airfield taxiway edge lights, although no maker’s mark has been confirmed, so it is being sold as an airfield taxiway light in that style/type rather than a definitively attributed example.

The yellow body and blue glass combination gives it huge visual impact, making it ideal for an aviation collector, industrial interior, quirky office, man cave, bar, studio, theatre prop department or anyone with a love of unusual salvage.

This is being sold as a decorative vintage salvage piece only. It has not been electrically tested, restored or converted for domestic use. Any future lighting conversion should be carried out by a qualified electrician.

Condition:

Good salvaged vintage condition with age and use-related wear throughout. There are chips, scuffs and paint losses to the yellow metal body and base, along with surface marks and scratches to the blue glass dome. The wear is consistent with previous functional use and forms a major part of its industrial charm.
