Vintage Smedley’s Chillie Paste Jar – Early 20th Century Patent Remedy / Apothecary Collectable

A wonderfully evocative piece of early 20th-century apothecary history, this small original jar of Smedley’s Chillie Paste is a fascinating survivor from the age of household remedies, chemist shop cure-alls and bold medicinal advertising.

The jar retains its original aged paper label, black screw-top metal lid and striking reddish-orange contents. The label identifies the product as Smedley’s Chillie Paste, sold by Hirst, Brooke & Hirst Ltd, Leeds, and connected with Mr Smedley of Matlock Bank — linking it to the famous Matlock hydropathic health culture of the late Victorian and Edwardian period.

The label advertises the paste for complaints such as rheumatism, bronchitis, sore throat, neuralgia, lumbago, chilblains and chest complaints, making it a wonderful example of antique patent medicine advertising. The wording “None genuine without this Trade Mark” and the owl-and-crescent trade mark detail add real period charm and collector appeal.

This is a particularly characterful example because it appears to retain its original contents, giving it excellent display value for a collector’s cabinet, vintage chemist display, apothecary shelf, medical history collection or curiosity cabinet.
