A charming early George V dressing-table scent or perfume bottle, dating to 1913. The substantial clear glass body has an elegant square form art deco in style with canted corners, bevelled shoulders and a thick, gently recessed base.
Its most attractive feature is the shaped sterling silver screw cap, finely engraved with flowers, scrolling foliage and a ribbon bow. The name “Enid” is beautifully engraved across the centre, giving the bottle a wonderfully personal connection to its original owner.
The cap carries a clear set of English silver hallmarks for Birmingham, 1913, together with the maker’s mark W.G.S & Co for W.G. Sother & Co Ltd. The Birmingham anchor, lion passant for sterling silver and date letter “o” can all be seen.
Maker history
W.G. Sother & Co Ltd was a Birmingham silversmith whose maker’s mark was registered in 1909. The company became particularly associated with attractive silver dressing-table accessories and hollowware, including mirrors, brushes, vanity jars, scent bottles and other personal accessories. This bottle was produced only around four years after the firm registered its mark, making it an appealing early example of its work.
Condition
The glass remains attractively clear, with small bubbles, light surface marks and minor residue consistent with age and previous use. No obvious cracks are visible. The silver cap screws into place and retains crisp floral engraving and clearly legible hallmarks.
There are several small dents and undulations to the silver cap, together with fine scratches, rubbing and areas of tarnish. These honest signs of use have been left visible and form part of the bottle’s history. Please study the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
A delightful and very displayable piece of antique vanity ware—especially appealing to collectors of hallmarked silver, early perfume bottles or anyone with the name Enid.
