The "barley twist," also known as spiral twist, or barley sugar column, is a design element that became popular in English furniture during the early Queen Anne period and was revived during the reign of Queen Victoria. It is characterized by a twisted or turned design, resembling a barber pole or the candy sweet of the era. These twists can be single, double, or quadruple.

Stick stands, also called umbrella stands, featuring barley twist supports, became particularly common during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, around the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were crafted from woods like oak and mahogany and often included a metal or lead drip tray at the bottom to collect water.
