The phrase “Keep Calm and Carry On” was coined by Britain's Ministry of Information (MOI) between June 27 and July 6, 1939. The phrase was part of a series of three posters created to raise the morale of the British public in preparation for World War II. The posters were intended to be issued in the event of war and were designed to look like a proclamation from the king. The posters were created by a collaboration between civil servants, with speechwriter A.P. Waterfield writing the words and illustrator Ernest Wallcousins designing the graphics. The Ministry of Information had some ground rules for the design, including using a special type and a distinctive uniform device.
