Vintage Folding Pocket Magnifying Glass – Circa 1930s
Vintage Folding Pocket Magnifying Glass – Circa 1930s
A charming vintage folding pocket magnifying glass, dating from approximately the 1920s to 1940s.
This compact little magnifier features a circular convex glass lens set within a brass or brass-toned metal frame. Its simple teardrop-shaped loop handle is hinged, allowing it to fold neatly across the lens when not in use. Measuring only around 5 cm when closed, it was designed to slip easily into a pocket, handbag, writing case or desk drawer.
Practical as well as decorative, magnifiers of this type would have been used for reading small print, studying maps, examining stamps, photographs or other finely detailed objects. Today, it makes an appealing addition to a collection of vintage optical instruments, writing accessories or desk curios.
The magnifier has a wonderfully authentic, timeworn appearance, with tarnishing, darkening and areas of blue-green oxidation around the metal rim. The glass shows surface scratches, small marks and signs of use consistent with its age. The folding handle remains attached and operates as intended.
A characterful little object with plenty of vintage charm.
Date: Circa 1920s–1940s
Material: Glass with brass or brass-toned metal frame
Approximate size: 10 cm long when open; 5 cm when folded
Condition: Good vintage condition with tarnishing, oxidation, surface scratches and age-related wear. Please study all photographs as they form an important part of the description.
Why We Love It
Its clever folding design, pocket-sized proportions and wonderfully aged finish give this practical little magnifier real personality. A lovely piece of everyday social history that has survived for many decades.
