Wonder Cakes have been part of Wonder Bread's history, which began in 1921 and was initially sold alongside the bread by Continental Baking Company. Both the bread and the cakes were sold to Hostess Brands before the company's 2012 bankruptcy, which led to Flowers Foods acquiring the Wonder brand. Recently, the company has expanded its snack cake line, which had not been a major focus for the brand since the acquisition.
Inspiration and origin: In 1921, the Taggart Baking Company created Wonder Bread, with the name inspired by the "wonder" of a hot air balloon race. The company, Continental Baking Company, also sold other products, including cakes under the Hostess brand.
Historical connection to Hostess: Wonder and Hostess were both owned by Continental Baking Company and later by Hostess Brands before its 2012 bankruptcy. This historical connection is evident as both brands have iconic baked goods.
Acquisition and expansion: Flowers Foods bought the Wonder brand from the bankrupt Hostess in 2012, marking the first time in over a decade that the brand was owned by a company separate from Hostess. In 2025, Wonder launched an extensive line of snack cakes, moving beyond its traditional bread products to re-enter a market it once shared with Hostess.
