Vintage Portable Precision Wattmeter – Elliott Brothers Ltd, London – 1955
.
A fascinating piece of mid-20th century scientific instrumentation, this Portable Precision Wattmeter (Dynamometer Type) was manufactured by Elliott Brothers (London) Ltd, one of Britain’s most important early electrical engineering companies.
.
Housed in a handsome solid wooden oak case with hinged lid, this instrument was designed for the accurate measurement of electrical power in laboratories, engineering workshops, and power-generation facilities. The beautifully curved analogue dial measures kilowatts, with a precision needle indicator and adjustable zero control.
.
Inside the lid is the original calibration chart and certification label, dated 26 November 1955, confirming the instrument was calibrated in absolute units and required to be kept level for accurate measurement. The instrument also lists the pressure and current windings used in its measurement system, demonstrating the meticulous engineering standards typical of the period.
.
The side of one of the instrument retains its original Bakelite connection panel, with terminals for measurement circuits, while the front features a ventilated grille and sturdy rubber feet. The overall construction is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, making it an excellent example of British scientific design.
.
Today, instruments like this are collected by enthusiasts of scientific apparatus, early electrical engineering, and industrial design, and they also make striking decorative pieces for offices, studios, or libraries.
.
