Vintage British Aerospace Pension Scheme Industrial Metal Application Box No. 17

Would make a wonderful coffee/ bedside table!

A wonderfully uncompromising piece of British industrial and aviation-related social history, this substantial black-painted steel box was once used for collecting application forms for the British Aerospace Pension Scheme.

The large surviving paper notice reads:

“Please place your application form in this box — no envelope required.”

The notice carries the distinctive British Aerospace name and logo, while the sides of the box are boldly numbered 17 in yellow. Its heavy-duty construction includes a hinged lift-up lid, narrow posting slot, internal sliding cover, carrying handle and numerous ring fittings, possibly intended for securing or sealing the box while in use.

This would almost certainly have stood within a British Aerospace factory, office or staff facility during a pension-enrolment exercise. Today, it makes a superb piece of authentic industrial décor, particularly for a collector of British aviation, factory memorabilia, corporate history or unusual storage.

The box manufacturer is not identified, so it is best described as commissioned for or used by British Aerospace, rather than manufactured by the aerospace company itself.

British Aerospace History

British Aerospace, commonly abbreviated to BAe, was formed on 29 April 1977 through the nationalisation and merger of the British Aircraft Corporation, Hawker Siddeley Aviation, Hawker Siddeley Dynamics and Scottish Aviation. It became one of Europe’s largest aerospace and defence businesses and was progressively privatised during the 1980s.

In 1999, British Aerospace merged with Marconi Electronic Systems to form BAE Systems. The use of the earlier British Aerospace branding therefore dates this box to somewhere between 1977 and 1999, with the lettering and graphic style suggesting an approximate 1980s to early 1990s date. The narrower date is an informed estimate rather than a confirmed production year.

Condition

Presented in authentic, unrestored vintage condition with considerable age and workplace wear. There are scratches, scuffs, paint losses, surface corrosion and oxidation throughout, including rusting and wear inside the box.

The original paper notice is heavily aged, stained, torn and incomplete around the edges, but the principal wording and British Aerospace branding remain clear and highly decorative. No key is present and the lock or security mechanism has not been tested. The hinged lid opens as shown.

Its battered appearance is an important part of its industrial character and history; this is not a polished reproduction.

Why We Love It

It is the original pension-scheme notice that transforms this from an old metal box into something genuinely evocative. It speaks of factory offices, noticeboards, long-service employees and the administrative life behind one of Britain’s most important aerospace companies. The yellow number 17 and decades of honest wear give it tremendous decorative presence.
