Antique early 20th century Mappin and Webb princess plate art deco salt

Antique early 20th century Mappin and Webb art deco salt cellar

Productcode: ODS1098

Antique early 20th century Mappin and Webb princess plate art deco salt cellar with original cobalt blue liner. Amazing! This is in incredible condition - small salt is by renowned silver Smith's Mappin and Webb.

-

It is very rare to have the original liner. There is a date letter 'h' in a shield on it. Unfortunately I can't find the year, but by the style and look I would say this is early 20th century art deco.

-

Some minor age related wear.

-

Size: 6 cm round 4 cm tall.

Art Deco, a decorative arts and architectural style, originated in the 1920s and flourished until the start of World War II. It emerged as a reaction against the ornate styles of the previous era, incorporating influences from various artistic movements, including Cubism, Futurism, and Constructivism. The style is characterized by its streamlined, geometric aesthetic, bold colors, and the use of luxurious materials.

Mappin & Webb is a British company with a rich history, dating back to 1775 when Jonathan Mappin opened a workshop in Sheffield. They are known for their high-quality silverware, fine jewelry, and luxury watches, and have held Royal Warrants since 1897. The company's story involves several generations of the Mappin family and later the addition of George Webb, leading to the name "Mappin & Webb". 1775: Jonathan Mappin establishes a silver workshop in Sheffield, focusing on crafting exquisite silverware for the British upper class.

1860s: John Mappin (Jonathan's great-grandson) starts his own business in London, initially called Mappin & Company. George Webb joins the company, leading to the name "Mappin, Webb & Co.".

1860: The first Mappin & Webb store opens at 77-78 Oxford Street, London.

1903: Mappin, Webb & Co. acquires Mappin Brothers.

1906-1908: The premises on Oxford Street are rebuilt to designs by Belcher & Joass.

1914: The Regent Street store is also rebuilt by Joass.

1950s: The Regent Street store proves more successful than the Oxford Street store.

1956: Mappin & Webb moves its headquarters from Oxford Street to Regent Street.

1959: Mappin & Webb is sold to Charles Clore's Sears Holdings.

1980s-1990s: The business changes ownership multiple times, eventually being acquired by Asprey in 1992.

1998: Judith Pilkington, managing director of Mappin & Webb, acquires Watches of Switzerland from Asprey, and both companies are acquired by Baugur Group in 2005.

Present: Mappin & Webb continues to operate as a luxury retailer, specializing in watches and luxury goods.

    vintage objects on table

Great item, was a glass jar with contents, well packaged, with a fragile label attached, arrived no problems. A near perfect example of a 50s/60s Hopkin and Williams chemical bottle. The postage was fair, the item was as described and a good value, especially with contents.

    vintage clock face

I am absolutely delighted with this item. It arrived by post quicker than I expected. It was very well packaged up and I will add it to my ever growing collection..I spent quite a while deciding whether to add this [item] to it. it is exactly as you described.
