Vintage early 20th century heavy metal fire bucket. Original, looks amazing!! This lovely decorative fire bucket would now make a great log bucket or garden display etc ( see pictures illustration only). Lots of age related wear, but still retains it's look as the fire and red paint are quite clear ( I have seen really battered ones with the wording and paint completely gone make £60 plus !!!)

Fire buckets have a long history, beginning with early use in ancient Egypt and evolving from basic tools for carrying water into organized firefighting equipment in the 17th and 18th centuries. Initially made of leather by local artisans, they were crucial for community-based firefighting, with owners often identifying them by name. Over time, they were made from metal and are still used today, filled with sand or water, for specific fire safety needs.

Early history
Ancient origins: The history of the bucket as an object for carrying liquids dates back to ancient times, with some evidence found in sculptures from around 3200 BC in Egypt.
Leather buckets: The organized use of fire buckets began to grow in the 17th century.
They were often made of leather by local cobblers or saddlers and could hold 2 to 3 gallons of water.
In colonial America and England, communities required homeowners and businesses to have fire buckets and passed laws to enforce it.
-
Owners' names were often painted on the buckets so they could be returned after a fire.
18th and 19th centuries
-
Community firefighting: Before modern fire departments, fire buckets were essential. Residents would form bucket brigades to pass water from a source to the fire.
The rise of fire societies: In some areas, like colonial New England, organized fire societies or clubs were formed, with members required to have their own equipment, including buckets.
Decoration and artistry: Fire buckets were not just utilitarian; they were often decorated with family crests, names, or patriotic designs, making them both practical tools and decorative objects.
-
Modern use
Transition to metal: In modern times, metal fire buckets became common and were often bright red, a tradition that continues today.
Evolving function: While largely replaced by modern equipment, fire buckets are still used for specific purposes, such as:
Extinguishing small fires
Containing flammable liquids with sand
Modern "fire buckets": Some modern versions, like the Bambi Bucket, are designed for aerial firefighting and are made of new materials.

Great item, was a glass jar with contents, well packaged, with a fragile label attached, arrived no problems. A near perfect example of a 50s/60s Hopkin and Williams chemical bottle. The postage was fair, the item was as described and a good value, especially with contents.
