A wonderfully sculptural antique copper jelly mould, featuring a dramatic spiral-fluted form with deeply defined ribs and a scalloped, flower-like outline.

When turned out, the mould would have produced an impressive swirling jelly, blancmange, mousse or savoury aspic—exactly the kind of elaborate centrepiece once associated with formal Victorian and Edwardian dining.

The exterior has been polished to reveal the rich, warm colour of the copper, while darker patination remains within the recessed spiral lines. The interior retains its traditional tin lining, now heavily darkened and worn from age and use.

The mould is impressed with the pattern or production number 9227. No identifiable maker’s mark is visible. Well-known specialist manufacturers included London firms such as Benham & Froud and Jones Brothers, alongside French makers including Trottier of Paris. Benham & Froud examples are normally identified by their distinctive orb-and-cross stamp, which is not present here, so we would not attribute this example to a particular maker.

From its construction, tin lining and decorative form, we believe this piece probably dates from the late 19th to early 20th century, although its precise origin remains uncertain.

Today it would make a striking piece of antique kitchenalia, ideal displayed on an open shelf, dresser or kitchen wall, or simply enjoyed as an unusual sculptural copper object.

Condition: Good antique decorative condition with surface marks, scratches, small dents and irregularities consistent with age and previous use. There is tarnishing and verdigris around some of the seams and recessed areas. The interior tinning is considerably darkened, mottled and worn. The exterior has been polished, with some areas of deeper patination remaining. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
