Antique James Dixon & Sons Sheffield Pewter Hip Flask – late 19th Early/ 20th
Antique James Dixon & Sons Sheffield Pewter Hip Flask
14 cm tall
10 cm wide
2 cm depth
A wonderfully atmospheric vintage pewter hip flask by James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield, with the classic rounded rectangular form designed to sit comfortably in the hand or pocket. It has a pleasing weight and honest surface patina, with age-related marks, light scratches, darker spotting and soft wear throughout — exactly the sort of character that gives an old gentleman’s flask its charm.
The flask has a screw-top cap with a ridged edge, and the base appears to carry the James Dixon & Sons Sheffield maker’s mark, although the mark is worn and not completely clear in the photograph. The overall look suggests an late 19th early-20th century pewter or Britannia metal flask, made as a practical pocket drinking vessel rather than a decorative reproduction.
James Dixon & Sons were one of Sheffield’s great metalware names, established in 1806 and known for silverware, electroplate, Britannia metal, pewter and sporting accessories. Their well-known trumpet and banner trademark was granted in 1879, and the firm became particularly associated with quality Sheffield-made flasks, shooting accessories, tableware and domestic metalware.
This piece would display beautifully in a country house interior, gentleman’s study, bar cabinet, prop collection or alongside other sporting, shooting and travel-related antiques. It has that understated, well-used charm that speaks of pockets, picnics, cold mornings and old-fashioned outdoor pursuits.
