Antique Victorian/Edwardian Fitted Jewellery Box with J.A. Monogram

A wonderfully timeworn antique jewellery box, most likely dating from the late Victorian or Edwardian period, circa 1890–1910. Similar boxes were designed for the dressing table or for travelling, with fitted compartments to keep jewellery and personal treasures neatly organised.

The wooden box is covered in textured black leather or leatherette and finished with fine gilt line decoration. The domed lid bears the original owner’s initials, “J.A.”, in decorative gilt lettering, giving the box a lovely sense of personal history.

Inside, the lid and lower compartment retain their original muted green silk lining. A removable fitted tray provides several separate storage sections, including two longer side compartments, a central velvet-lined area and a narrow padded section suitable for rings or smaller pieces. Lifting out the tray reveals a generous additional compartment beneath.

The box retains its metal hinges, front escutcheon and internal locking fittings. There is no key included, and the box is therefore sold as an unlocked decorative and storage piece.

This is an authentically aged example with plenty of character. There are scuffs, scratches, rubbed areas and losses to the black covering, particularly around the corners and edges. The gilt decoration has worn in places, and the green silk and velvet show fading, staining, marks and general deterioration consistent with considerable age and use. The removable tray remains usable, and the wear forms an important part of the box’s antique appearance.
