Vintage 1961 Born Free by Joy Adamson with Original World Books Broadsheet
Vintage 1961 Born Free by Joy Adamson with Original World Books Broadsheet
A wonderfully evocative piece of mid-century publishing and wildlife history, this vintage 1961 edition of Born Free: A Lioness of Two Worlds by Joy Adamson is accompanied by its original March 1961 World Books Broadsheet—the monthly review issued to members of The Reprint Society.
More than simply a vintage book, this is a beautifully preserved snapshot of the extraordinary public response to the true story of Elsa the lioness. The original Broadsheet identifies Born Free as “This Month’s Choice” and discusses the book’s success, the television film about Elsa and the Adamsons, and the recent news of Elsa’s death in January 1961. Together, the book and its contemporary publication form a particularly appealing collector’s pairing, rich in social, literary and natural-history interest.
About the book
Written by artist, naturalist and conservationist Joy Adamson, Born Free recounts the remarkable true story of Elsa, an orphaned lion cub raised by Joy and her husband, George Adamson, in Kenya.
Rather than keeping Elsa permanently in captivity, the Adamsons worked patiently to prepare her for an independent life in the wild. Their pioneering efforts, and the strong bond they developed with Elsa, captured the imagination of readers around the world.
First published in 1960, Born Free became an international bestseller and one of the most influential wildlife books of the twentieth century. It later inspired the celebrated 1966 film of the same name and helped shape changing public attitudes towards wildlife conservation, animal welfare and the keeping of wild animals in captivity.
This edition was published in 1961 by The Reprint Society Ltd, London, by arrangement with Wm. Collins, Sons & Co. Ltd. It was printed in Great Britain by Collins Clear-Type Press in London and Glasgow.
The title page records:
Born Free: A Lioness of Two Worlds
Written by Joy Adamson
With extracts from George Adamson’s letters
Preface by Lord William Percy
Foreword by Captain Charles Pitman
The volume contains 144 pages and includes photographic illustration sections depicting Elsa, the Adamsons and scenes from Elsa’s life in Kenya.
The original March 1961 World Books Broadsheet
The real charm of this example lies in the survival of the original March 1961 Broadsheet, published for members of World Books by The Reprint Society.
The front page announces Born Free as the month’s featured selection and describes it as one of the most remarkable animal books ever written. The article refers to the Adamsons’ extraordinary relationship with Elsa, the recent television programme about her life and the newspaper coverage that followed her death.
The piece also records the enormous early success of the book, including its international sales and growing reputation. It offers a fascinating contemporary view of Born Free before the later film adaptation made Elsa’s story even more famous.
Alongside the Born Free feature, the Broadsheet includes:
A review of James Barlow’s The Patriots
A contribution by former detective superintendent Robert Fabian
World Books members’ correspondence
Discussion of increasing postage and packing charges
A promotional feature for Winston Churchill’s six-volume war memoirs
Period advertising, photography and illustrations
This type of ephemeral publication was intended to be read and then discarded, so its survival with the correct book is particularly appealing. It adds historical context and makes the set far more engaging than the book alone.
A glimpse into mid-century book-club culture
The Reprint Society and World Books played an important role in British reading culture during the mid-twentieth century. Members received specially produced editions of popular and critically acclaimed books, together with newsletters, reviews and details of forthcoming selections.
This Broadsheet captures that world perfectly. Its typography, monochrome photography, blue printed highlights and editorial style immediately evoke the early 1960s, when monthly book clubs brought new literature directly into homes across Britain.
It is an appealing item not only for collectors of Joy Adamson and Born Free, but also for anyone interested in vintage books, conservation history, wildlife writing, British publishing, social history and original paper ephemera.
Condition
The book is offered in good vintage condition overall.
The black boards and mustard-coloured cloth spine show age-related handling wear, light marking and some discolouration, particularly to the spine. The printed title panel remains clear and attractive. The pages shown are clean and well preserved, with gentle age toning consistent with a book of this age. The binding appears sound.
The original dust jacket is not present.
The Broadsheet has been folded and shows the expected creasing, age toning, small edge tears and general handling wear associated with a lightweight paper publication from 1961. There is also handwritten notation along the upper edge. These signs of age are visible in the photographs and form part of its authentic vintage character.
The Broadsheet should ideally be stored flat or in an archival sleeve to help protect its original folds and edges.
Why we love it
This is one of those vintage books where the accompanying paper ephemera tells almost as much of the story as the book itself.
The March 1961 Broadsheet places the reader directly in the moment when Elsa’s story was becoming an international phenomenon. Its reference to her recent death gives the publication a poignant immediacy, while the surrounding articles provide a wonderfully nostalgic glimpse into British book-club life at the beginning of the 1960s.
A thoughtful gift for a wildlife lover, conservation enthusiast, collector of vintage natural-history books or admirer of Elsa’s enduring story.
This price reflects the book’s status as a Reprint Society edition rather than a first edition, while recognising the added collector and display appeal of the original March 1961 World Books Broadsheet.
