Mappin & Webb, a name synonymous with exquisite silverware and jewellery, boasts a history spanning over 250 years. Founded in 1775 by Jonathan Mappin in Sheffield, the company initially focused on crafting high-quality silverware for English high society. Over time, Mappin & Webb expanded internationally, earned Royal Warrants, and became a leading name in both silverware and jewellery.

Here's a more detailed look at their history:

1775: Jonathan Mappin establishes a silver workshop in Sheffield.

Mid-19th Century: The business evolves into Mappin Brothers, with several family members involved.

1860: John Mappin, one of Jonathan Mappin's great-grandsons, establishes Mappin & Company in London, which later becomes Mappin, Webb & Co. after John's brother-in-law, George Webb, joins.

1860s: The first Mappin & Webb store opens on Oxford Street, London, showcasing fine silverware, vanity products, and candelabras.

Early 20th Century: Mappin & Webb expands its product line to include jewelry and acquires Mappin Brothers.

1906-1908: The Oxford Street store is rebuilt to designs by Belcher & Joass.

1914: The Regent Street store is rebuilt.

1950s: Mappin & Webb experiences a resurgence, receiving commissions for tableware and cutlery for prestigious establishments like the QE2 and leading cruise lines.

1980s onwards: Mappin & Webb becomes part of Aurum Holdings, a luxury goods group.

2012: Mappin & Webb's master craftsman is appointed Crown Jeweller, solidifying their connection to the British monarchy.

Today: Mappin & Webb continues as a high-end jeweler and silversmith, maintaining its legacy of craftsmanship and royal connections.

Mappin & Webb - Wikipedia

Mappin & Webb traces its origins to 1775, when Jonathan Mappin opened a silver workshop in Sheffield, then as now a major centre of the English silver trade.
