A wonderfully evocative piece of British domestic history, this original Kleen-e-ze wire carpet beater dates from the late 1920s or early 1930s and bears the maker’s details on its metal collar:

Before vacuum cleaners became an everyday household appliance, rugs and carpets were carried outdoors, draped over a washing line or railing and firmly beaten to remove embedded dust, soot, grit and household debris. This substantial wire beater would once have been an essential piece of cleaning equipment, representing the considerable physical work involved in maintaining a home during the early 20th century.

The beater features an attractive dark polished wooden handle, shaped for a comfortable grip, with a branded white-metal collar connecting it to a strong twisted-wire shaft. The working end is formed from several flexible steel-wire loops, designed to strike a wide surface area while allowing the wires to move and spring with each blow.

Its irregular, sculptural wire form gives the piece enormous decorative appeal today. Displayed in a vintage kitchen, utility room, laundry room, boot room or country interior, it provides an authentic touch of early household nostalgia. Condition

Presented in genuine vintage condition with age-related wear throughout.

The dark wooden handle retains a rich, glossy patina, with scratches, rubbing, small marks and areas of surface wear from many years of use and storage. The metal collar displays tarnishing and wear, although the maker’s name, registered design number and 1928 registration date remain visible.

The twisted shaft and flexible wire loops show oxidation, surface rust, discolouration and some distortion consistent with their original working purpose. The loops are naturally uneven and should not be expected to sit in a perfectly symmetrical shape. They appear substantially complete from the photographs.

The item has not been heavily restored or polished, allowing it to retain its authentic character and timeworn appearance. Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
