A wonderfully characterful large vintage wicker basket, handwoven from natural willow and retaining all the warmth, texture and honest wear that make old working baskets so appealing.

Measuring approximately 60cm long × 50cm wide × 25cm high, this is a generously sized, shallow basket with a broad rectangular footprint, tightly woven base and substantial braided rim. Its low, open form is typical of the practical baskets once used in bakeries, grocers, storerooms and traditional shops, where bread, produce or packaged goods needed to be attractively displayed and easily reached.

Without a maker’s mark or documented provenance, its exact original purpose cannot be confirmed. However, its size, sturdy construction and absence of carrying handles suggest it was probably made as a working display or storage basket, rather than as an everyday shopping basket. It may have been used for bread, textiles, produce, packaging or general commercial storage.

Likely dating from around the mid-20th century, possibly the 1950s–1970s, the basket has developed a beautiful mixture of warm honey, caramel and deep brown tones. The natural variations within the willow, together with areas of rubbing and darker patination, give it an especially rich and timeworn appearance.

The basket has been constructed using thick structural stakes, closely woven side walls and a densely worked rectangular base. The upper edge is finished with a substantial multi-rod border, giving it a strong sculptural profile. Its slightly irregular shape and individual variations in the rods are part of its handmade character.

Condition

This is an authentic vintage working basket with visible age-related wear throughout.

There is general rubbing, surface marking, colour variation and natural darkening to the willow. Some rods around the rim, corners and side edges are broken, lifted, loose or protruding, and there are small areas of loss within the weave. The basket also has some slight age-related movement and irregularity to its shape.

The main body and woven base remain substantially intact, but because of the projecting and damaged rods, the basket is best suited to decorative storage and lighter contents rather than carrying heavy loads.

Care should be taken when handling, particularly around the rim and corners. A fabric liner may be useful when storing delicate textiles.

Due to its age and unknown original finish, we would not recommend using it for direct contact with unpackaged food.
