Vintage Banania French Cocoa Tin – Yellow Advertising Tin (c.1950s–1960s)
Vintage Banania French Cocoa Tin – Yellow Advertising Tin (c.1950s–1960s)
.
18 cm tall
10 cm square
.
A bright and eye-catching vintage French Banania advertising tin, finished in the brand’s iconic yellow livery with bold blue lettering and the familiar Banania mascot on the front. These tins once held Banania’s popular chocolate breakfast drink mix and today remain highly collectible pieces of European advertising memorabilia.
.
The front of the tin features the classic “BANANIA – Le Petit Déjeuner Chocolaté” slogan, with the phrase “Y’a bon…”, a well-known advertising tagline historically used by the brand. The reverse side is marked “Farine” (flour), suggesting the tin may have been repurposed for kitchen storage once empty—a common and charming practice in mid-century households.
.
The removable lid still displays the original printed instructions (Mode d’Emploi) and ingredient information, including references to cereals, cocoa, and banana flavouring. This detail helps place the tin in the mid-20th century period, when Banania packaging frequently included preparation instructions inside the lid.
.
With its vibrant colours and graphic design, the tin makes a wonderful decorative piece for a retro kitchen, café display, or advertising tin collection.
.
Maker History – Banania
Banania was founded in 1914 by Pierre-François Lardet in France. Inspired by a drink he encountered while travelling in Nicaragua, Lardet developed a powdered breakfast drink made from cocoa, banana flour, cereals, and sugar.
.
During the early 20th century, Banania became hugely popular across France and its colonies. The company’s distinctive yellow packaging and smiling mascot became one of the most recognisable pieces of French advertising design. By the 1920s–1960s, Banania tins were widely sold in grocers and were often reused in the home for storing flour, sugar, or biscuits—helping many survive to the present day.
.
Today, original Banania tins are collected for their bold graphic design, nostalgic branding, and place in European advertising history.
.
Condition
Good vintage condition with age-related wear consistent with use:
Minor scuffs and paint loss around the edges
Some scratches to the surface
Interior clean with original printed lid panel
This patina adds to the authentic vintage character.
