WW2 H.M. Government Sterilised First Aid Dressing 8" x 6" – Johnson & Johnson
WW2 H.M. Government Sterilised First Aid Dressing 8" x 6" – Johnson & Johnson – Unopened Wartime Medical Curio
A fascinating piece of wartime medical history, this original H.M. Government Sterilised First Aid Dressing offers a small but evocative glimpse into the practical realities of life during the Second World War.
Wrapped in its original blue paper packaging, the dressing is clearly printed:
“H. M. Government – Sterilised First Aid Dressing 8" x 6"”
with printed instructions advising:
“Do Not Handle The Pad.”
The packet is also marked for Johnson & Johnson, Great Britain Ltd, with the locations Slough & Gargrave printed beneath. Johnson & Johnson were an important supplier of medical and first aid goods, and examples such as this would have formed part of emergency medical provisions for military, civil defence, workplace, institutional or home-front use.
This is the larger 8" x 6" size dressing, still enclosed in its original paper wrapper. The packet has a wonderfully authentic look, with the soft blue-grey paper, period typography, government wording and maker’s mark giving it strong display appeal. It is a very tactile little object — the sort of item that speaks quietly but powerfully of wartime preparedness, air raid precautions, field medicine and the everyday practicalities of emergency care.
A brilliant addition to a collection of WW2 home front items, medical collectables, civil defence memorabilia, pharmacy history, military ephemera or cabinet of curiosities displays.
