Antique early 20th Century Silver-Plated & Cut Glass Claret Jug

An especially elegant early 20th-century claret jug, combining a substantial square glass body with beautifully shaped silver-plated fittings.

The clear glass body is decorated throughout with a closely worked diamond lattice pattern, and a stunning star cut base creating plenty of sparkle and texture. Above is a polished cylindrical silver-plated collar with a distinctive fluted triangular pouring spout, hinged domed lid and pointed finial. Fine beaded detailing around the lid and handle introduces a restrained neoclassical touch.

Its most striking feature is the wonderfully elongated scroll handle. Sweeping gracefully from the upper mount and finishing in a curled terminal beside the glass body, it gives the jug an unusually tall and architectural silhouette.

Originally intended for serving claret or other wines at the dining table, it would now make a fabulous addition to a collection of antique barware, an elegant display piece or a particularly memorable gift for a wine enthusiast.

Maker and History

No maker’s mark can be seen in the supplied photographs, so we have not attributed the jug to a particular manufacturer. Marks on pieces of this type are sometimes found beneath the lid, beside the hinge or on the underside of the plated mount.

Silver-mounted and silver-plated claret jugs became fashionable during the Victorian period and remained popular into the early decades of the 20th century. They commonly combined sparkling patterned glass with hinged metal covers and decorative handles, providing the appearance of solid silver tableware at a more accessible price. The square body, beaded ornament and relatively restrained metalwork suggest a likely date of approximately 1900–1920. Claret jugs of this general type were widely produced by British and Continental silver-plating workshops, but design alone is not enough to assign a maker confidently.

Condition

Presented in good vintage condition with light surface marks, minor tarnishing and plating wear consistent with age. The hinged lid opens correctly and the handle appears secure. There is some visible cloudiness or residue around the junction between the glass neck and metal mount. The glass appears free from major cracks or substantial chips in the photographs, although it should be checked carefully before listing and tested for watertightness if intended for use.
