Vintage Handwoven Asian Bamboo Basket – Double-Walled Herringbone Weave

A beautifully characterful vintage basket, handwoven from split bamboo in a rich mix of warm chestnut and deep brown tones.

This substantial oval basket has been skilfully constructed with two layers of weaving. The exterior features a striking herringbone or chevron pattern, while the interior is more finely woven and finished with a broad wrapped rim. Small irregularities in the shape and weave are part of its handmade charm and give it the wonderfully authentic appearance of a traditional household piece.

We believe it is most likely of Chinese or Southeast Asian origin and dates from around the mid-20th century. Baskets of this type were traditionally made for practical household storage and may have been used for grain, dried foods, produce, sewing materials or other everyday items.

Today, it would make an attractive decorative storage basket for a rustic kitchen, pantry, bathroom or living space. It could also be used to hold dried flowers, textiles, magazines or a collection of smaller vintage treasures.

The basket is in genuine vintage condition with age-related wear throughout. There are broken, split and displaced sections around the wrapped rim, including a more noticeable area of wear at one end. The weave also shows rubbing, darkening, dust and old marks from use. Despite this, the main body and base remain together and the basket displays beautifully. Due to its age and rim wear, we recommend it for decorative purposes or light storage rather than carrying heavy items.
