The history of sugar sifters and sugar casters includes the development of sugar sifter spoons, the use of sugar in European diets, and the rise of sugar casters as a staple on dining tables:

Sugar sifter spoons

Developed in the mid-18th century, sugar sifter spoons were similar in size and shape to sauce ladles, but with flattened bowl bases. Some examples of antique sugar sifter spoons include the Rich Bead Silver Sugar Sifter Spoon from 1899, the Fiddle & Thread Silver Sugar Sifter Spoon from 1859, and the King's Pattern Silver Sugar Sifter Spoon from 1823.

Sugar casters

The name "caster" comes from the action of sprinkling sugar over food. Sugar casters were originally small, cylindrical containers with perforated tops that were part of larger silver tableware sets. They became a symbol of wealth and refinement on the tables of the aristocracy. The word "caster" was eventually extended to other vessels used to contain condiments at the table.

Sugar loaves

Before the 19th century, sugar came in solid blocks called sugar loaves, which needed to be broken into smaller pieces before use. Only the wealthy could afford the effort needed to produce the small granules needed for a sugar caster.
