The saying codds wallop is believed to be from hitting the top of a codds bottle to open it and therefore get to the drink " codds wallop"
antique Codd-neck bottle, commonly known as a Codd bottle or marble bottle.
Purpose:
Invented by Hiram Codd in 1872, these bottles were specifically designed to store and sell carbonated drinks, preventing them from going flat.
Design:
Codd bottles are characterized by their thick glass construction, designed to withstand internal pressure, and a unique closure system involving a glass marble and a rubber washer/gasket enclosed within the neck.
Functionality:
The pressure from the carbonated beverage inside would push the marble against the rubber seal, creating an airtight closure. To open, the marble would be pushed down to release the pressure and allow access to the drink.
Due to their unique design and historical significance, Codd bottles are now highly sought-after collectible items.
Modern Use:
While largely replaced by other bottle designs, Codd bottles are still used today for certain traditional soft drinks like the Japanese Ramune and the Indian Banta.
