The history of the metal door coat hook is closely tied to the development of the clothes hanger. The modern wire coat hanger was inspired by a 1869 coat hook patented by O.A. North, and a simplified version was created in 1903 by Albert J. Parkhouse, who bent a piece of wire to hang his hat due to a lack of hooks. Early coat hooks and hangers were often made of wood, but wire hangers became more common in the early 20th century, evolving to support heavier clothing.
