The tale of Puss in Boots has deep roots, with its origins traceable back to Italian folklore. The story's oldest known written version, "Costantino Fortunato," appeared in Giovanni Francesco Straparola's collection of tales, The Facetious Nights, published between 1550 and 1553. While Straparola's version features a cat who is actually a fairy in disguise, it established the core narrative structure that subsequent tellings followed, including the clever cat helping his master gain power and wealth.

Perrault's French version, published in 1697 in Stories or Tales of Past Times, is widely considered the most famous iteration. The story's enduring popularity has led to numerous adaptations, including the character's appearance in the Shrek franchise and subsequent spin-offs, as well as its representation in various media, including anime and pantomimes.
