The Martini brand of vermouth was created in 1863 by Alessandro Martini and Luigi Rossi in Pessione, Italy, as part of their company, Martini & Rossi, which became a globally recognised name synonymous with Italian aperitivo culture. While the exact origin of the Martini cocktail is debated, one prominent theory suggests the popular gin and vermouth cocktail was named after the Martini & Rossi vermouth brand itself.
The Company's Founding
1863: Alessandro Martini, a businessman, and Luigi Rossi, an herbalist and liquorist, partnered to take over the National Wine & Spirits Distillery in Pessione, near Turin, and began creating their famous Martini Rosso vermouth.
Martini & Sola & Cia: The company was initially named Martini, Sola & Cia.
Martini & Rossi: In 1879, the Sola family sold their shares, and the company was renamed Martini & Rossi, its name today.
Global Expansion
Early Exports: By the late 1800s, Martini & Rossi was exporting its vermouths worldwide.
New York City: The brand's first shipment to New York City occurred in 1867.
World Recognition: The brand was awarded numerous international prizes for its quality and became a staple in cocktails around the world.
The Cocktail's Origin (Theories)
The "Martini" Name: One prominent theory suggests the popular cocktail was named after the Martini brand. As Martini & Rossi became famous for their vermouth, patrons at bars would simply ask for a "Martini".
The Martini Cocktail: The brand's vermouth became a staple in American culture by the early 20th century. The popularity of the Martini cocktail surged during Prohibition and continued to rise after.
Other Claims: Other theories propose the Martini cocktail was named after other people, places, or drinks.
Martini Vermouth Today
Continued Tradition: The secret formula for the original Martini Rosso has been guarded by generations of master blenders.
Modern Products: Today, Martini produces a range of vermouths and other spirits, with their Riserva Speciale range being a testament to their continued innovation.
