Lacquer's history began in East Asia, with the earliest known examples originating in Neolithic China around 7,000 years ago. This durable, resin-based coating became a sophisticated art form in China and later Japan, evolving into highly valued functional and decorative items. East Asian lacquer gained popularity in Europe around the 16th century, inspiring local craftsmanship and eventually leading to the development of synthetic lacquers in the West.
