Why do we use recycled packaging?

When you buy an antique or vintage item from the Objetdart-stuff online shop, your purchase won't be delivered in branded, shiny new boxes. We always use packaging materials that have been used before. In the same way that antique and vintage items have lived a previous life, we feel that packaging should also live longer too. So, don't be confused when you open your delivery and it's in an Amazon, or White Company box (for example!).

Using packaging materials again means we can keep our overheads down, and therefore keep the cost of our stock in store low too. We can pass these savings onto you, the customer. It also contributes to recycling in several ways:

1. Reduction of Waste: Reusing packaging materials means they don't end up as single-use items that are discarded after one use. This reduces the amount of waste that would otherwise be generated, helping to alleviate the burden on landfills and the environment.

2. Conservation of Resources: Reusing packaging materials reduces the need for new materials to be produced. This conserves resources such as wood, paper, plastic, and energy that would have been used in the manufacturing process.

3. Energy Savings: Manufacturing new packaging materials requires energy for extraction, processing, and transportation. By reusing packaging materials, less energy is needed overall, leading to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impact.

4. Cost Savings: Reusing packaging materials can also lead to cost savings for businesses and consumers. Instead of constantly purchasing new packaging, reusing materials can help reduce expenses associated with packaging procurement.

5. Promotion of Circular Economy: Reusing packaging materials is a key component of a circular economy, where resources are kept in use for as long as possible, thereby minimizing waste and maximizing the value of resources. What is a circular economy? The promotion of a circular economy involves shifting away from the traditional linear economic model of "take, make, dispose" to one that aims to keep resources in use for as long as possible, extract the maximum value from them, and then regenerate products and materials at the end of their service life. Reusing packaging materials plays a crucial role in advancing this circular economy

Resource Conservation: Reusing packaging materials reduces the need for new resources to be extracted, processed, and manufactured into packaging. This conserves natural resources such as wood, water, minerals, and energy, which are essential for producing packaging materials like paper, plastic, glass, and metal.

Waste Reduction: By reusing packaging materials instead of disposing of them after a single use, the amount of waste generated is significantly reduced. This helps to alleviate the pressure on landfills and reduces the environmental impact associated with waste disposal, such as pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Energy Savings: Manufacturing new packaging materials requires a considerable amount of energy for extraction, processing, and transportation. Reusing packaging materials reduces the need for these energy-intensive processes, leading to significant energy savings and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Cost Efficiency: Reusing packaging materials can lead to cost savings for businesses and consumers alike. Businesses can reduce expenses associated with purchasing new packaging materials, while consumers may benefit from reduced prices or incentives for returning packaging for reuse.

Promotion of Innovation: Embracing the circular economy model encourages innovation in design, materials, and business models. Companies are incentivized to create packaging that is durable, reusable, and easily recyclable, leading to the development of more sustainable packaging solutions and systems.

6. Closing the Loop: Reusing packaging materials creates a closed-loop system where materials are continually reused, recycled, and regenerated. This reduces reliance on virgin resources and fosters a more self-sustaining and resilient economy.

7. Consumer Engagement: Encouraging consumers to participate in reusing packaging materials through initiatives such as refill programs, deposit-return systems, and reusable packaging options promotes greater awareness of sustainability issues and encourages responsible consumption habits.

Overall, reusing packaging materials is a fundamental strategy for advancing the circular economy by conserving resources, reducing waste, saving energy, promoting innovation, and engaging consumers in sustainable practices. It represents a shift towards a more sustainable and regenerative approach to packaging and consumption.
