Maker History: Chivers & Sons

Chivers & Sons was founded in 1873 by Stephen Chivers in Histon, near Cambridge. Originally a fruit-growing and jam-making enterprise, the company quickly expanded into one of Britain’s best-known producers of preserves, marmalades, and bottled products.

.

By the early 20th century, Chivers operated a large factory complex at Histon and produced a wide range of packaged goods, supplying both domestic households and institutional markets. Their products were exported across the British Empire, and the company became synonymous with quality food preservation and bottling.

.

Embossed glass containers like this were produced for durability, reuse, and brand recognition before paper labels became standard. The Histon works remained a major employer in the area for decades and is an important part of British industrial and food heritage.

Antique Chemist Bottle – Foster Clark Ltd, Maidstone

Description

A characterful early 20th-century embossed glass chemist bottle in soft aqua glass, with strong raised lettering reading:

“FOSTER CLARK LTD – MAIDSTONE”

The bottle has a classic rectangular pharmaceutical form with a short neck and thick glass walls, designed for durability and repeated use. Its gentle sea-green tone and worn surface give it the authentic charm collectors look for in antique apothecary pieces.

.

There is visible age-related wear, light staining and internal residue consistent with long-term storage and use in a working chemist’s environment. Today, it makes a wonderful decorative piece for vintage kitchen displays, apothecary collections, or industrial-style interiors.

Maker History: Foster Clark Ltd

Foster Clark Ltd was a regional British pharmaceutical and dispensing chemist based in Maidstone, Kent. Like many local chemists of the late Victorian and Edwardian period, the firm supplied medicines, tonics, and preparations made in-house.

.

Before the widespread use of disposable packaging, chemists relied on embossed reusable bottles such as this to reinforce their brand and encourage customers to return containers for refilling. These bottles represent an era when pharmacy was highly local, personal, and craft-based.

.

The style and manufacture of this bottle suggest a date of approximately c. 1890–1920, when small independent chemists operated throughout towns and cities across Britain.

    vintage objects on table

Great item, was a glass jar with contents, well packaged, with a fragile label attached, arrived no problems. A near perfect example of a 50s/60s Hopkin and Williams chemical bottle. The postage was fair, the item was as described and a good value, especially with contents.

    vintage clock face

I am absolutely delighted with this item. It arrived by post quicker than I expected. It was very well packaged up and I will add it to my ever growing collection..I spent quite a while deciding whether to add this [item] to it. it is exactly as you described.
