Antique Japanese Antimony Box with Floral & Landscape Motif

Antique Japanese Antimony Box with Floral & Landscape Motif

SKU: ODS715

Overview

This exquisite antique Japanese antimony box is a remarkable example of fine craftsmanship, likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century during the Meiji or early Taisho era. The box features intricate embossed floral and landscape designs, showcasing the artistic tradition of Japanese metalwork. It is made from antimony, a material widely used during this period for its versatility in casting highly detailed decorative items.

This piece is functional as well as decorative, featuring a keyhole for securing personal treasures. While the maker’s mark—a diamond-shaped cartouche with the letter "A"—adds a layer of mystery, it suggests the box was likely crafted for export to Western markets, a common practice for Japanese artisans during the Meiji era.

Dimensions: 15 cm wide 7 cm tall 9 1/2 cm depth

The History of Japanese Antimony Ware

Antimony, a soft and silvery-gray metal, became popular in Japan during the late 19th century due to its suitability for casting detailed designs. Japanese craftsmen, particularly during the Meiji period (1868–1912), excelled in creating decorative objects for both domestic use and export markets. The Meiji era marked Japan’s emergence onto the global stage, and its artisans began producing a wide array of goods tailored to Western tastes while preserving traditional Japanese aesthetics.

Antimony ware was primarily used for small, ornamental items like boxes, figurines, and decorative plaques. Its lightweight nature and ability to hold intricate details made it ideal for pieces featuring traditional motifs, such as this box's floral patterns and idyllic landscapes.

The floral decorations seen here are emblematic of Japanese design, with chrysanthemums symbolizing longevity and resilience. Such boxes were often used to store tea, jewellery, or small personal items and were prized as both functional and decorative pieces.

The export of Japanese goods soared during this era, with items like this box finding eager buyers in Europe and America, who admired the skill and artistry of Japanese metalwork. Marks like the "A" seen on the base of this box were often applied by workshops or export companies to identify their goods.

Condition

The box is in good antique condition, with signs of wear commensurate with its age. Please note in particular the material padding that has been used inside the box. This is very warn and suggests the box has been used to hold make up. This is detachable and the box could be refurbished.

Surface scratches and patina add to its character and authenticity.

The lock mechanism remains intact, though a key is not included.

Why This Piece is Special

This box not only serves as a beautiful decorative object but also as a tangible connection to Japan’s rich history of craftsmanship and international trade. Its delicate embossing, traditional motifs, and functional design make it a unique addition to any collection of Japanese antiques or metalwork.

vintage objects on table

Great item, was a glass jar with contents, well packaged, with a fragile label attached, arrived no problems. A near perfect example of a 50s/60s Hopkin and Williams chemical bottle. The postage was fair, the item was as described and a good value, especially with contents.

vintage clock face

I am absolutely delighted with this item. It arrived by post quicker than I expected. It was very well packaged up and I will add it to my ever growing collection..I spent quite a while deciding whether to add this [item] to it. it is exactly as you described.
