A beautifully tactile vintage stoneware carriage foot warmer by Pearson’s of Chesterfield, made in heavy glazed stoneware with a warm oatmeal-beige finish. This charming domestic travel piece would originally have been filled with hot water and used to warm feet during cold carriage, motor car, railway, or household journeys before modern heating made such objects obsolete.

The form is wonderfully practical and decorative: a cylindrical stoneware body, rounded end handle for carrying or positioning, screw stopper to the top, and an impressed Pearsons Chesterfield maker’s mark near the base. The underside is stamped “3 PT”, indicating a three-pint capacity.

Pearson & Co. of Chesterfield were well known for producing durable stoneware utility pieces, including jars, bottles, crocks and household wares. Their stoneware is now appreciated not only for its function, but for its place in everyday British social history — the kind of object that tells a story of draughty journeys, cold bedrooms, early motoring and practical home comfort.

This example has lovely age and character, with surface marks, staining, kiln speckling, scuffs and signs of use throughout. The screw stopper is present, which is a real bonus for display. It has not been tested for water-tightness and is therefore sold as a decorative collector’s item only.
