The history of Schweppes begins with the discovery of carbonated water by Jacob Schweppe in 1783. Schweppe was a Swiss-born jeweler and amateur scientist. He used the discoveries of English chemist Joseph Priestley to develop his process for making carbonated mineral water.

Early history

1783: Schweppe founded the Schweppes Company in Geneva.

1792: Schweppe moved the business to London and opened his first factory on Drury Lane.

1870: Ginger ale was introduced to the Schweppes product line.

1871: Tonic water, the first carbonated tonic, was introduced to the Schweppes product line.

1957: Bitter lemon was introduced to the Schweppes product line.

Later history

1969: Schweppes merged with Cadbury to become Cadbury Schweppes.

2008: Cadbury Schweppes was split, with the US beverage unit becoming Keurig Dr Pepper.

Today: The Schweppes brand is owned by the Coca-Cola Company in some territories, and by Schweppes International Limited in others.

Schweppes products include ginger ale, bitter lemon, soda water, and tonic water.
