A particularly attractive pair of Edwardian glass dressing table jars, each fitted with an ornate solid sterling silver screw-top lid with stunning silver guilt lining and fully hallmarked for London 1903.

The substantial clear glass bodies are beautifully faceted with long vertical panels, giving them a crisp architectural appearance and plenty of sparkle. The heavy bases and quality of the glass give the jars a lovely solid feel.

The real stars are the silver lids. Each is richly worked in a repoussé Rococo-inspired design of scrolling foliage, flowers and shells, surrounding an engraved period monogram to the centre. The raised decoration has acquired a wonderful depth of patina, particularly within the recessed areas, which really brings out the detail.

The hallmarks include the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard's head for the London Assay Office and the date letter ‘h’ for 1903.

The maker's mark W & Co Ld can be attributed to Wolfsky & Co Ltd, a highly regarded London firm particularly associated with luxury dressing cases, travelling cases and their fitted silver and glass accessories. Wolfsky & Co were specialist dressing-case makers and their mark is recorded on such pieces as jar lids, perfume bottles and flasks. The firm's London maker's mark was registered in the late 19th century, and surviving fitted cases demonstrate the quality of their work.

Dating from the height of the Edwardian period, these jars would originally have formed part of a gentleman's or lady's fitted travelling or dressing case. Today they work beautifully as decorative dressing-table pieces, small storage jars or simply as collectible examples of Edwardian silver-mounted glass.
