Antique Oak Four-Tier Letter Rack / Desk Organiser – Late Victorian / Edwardian

This has loads of character as a late Victorian/Edwardian oak letter rack, probably around c.1890–1910. The shaped sides and back, graduated compartments and simple hanging aperture are very typical of practical domestic/office pieces from around the turn of the century.

Antique Oak Four-Tier Letter Rack / Desk Organiser – Late Victorian / Edwardian c.1900

A wonderfully characterful antique oak letter rack dating from around the turn of the 20th century, with four graduated compartments originally designed for organising letters, correspondence, bills and papers.

Made in oak, the rack has beautifully shaped graduated sides and a scalloped gallery back with a central hanging aperture, allowing it to be wall mounted if preferred. Each of the internal dividers has a gently shaped upper edge, creating an attractive waterfall effect while making the contents of each section easy to reach.

What really makes this piece is its surface. More than a century of use has left the oak with a wonderfully warm, mellow colour, darkened edges, old marks, spotting, staining and traces of previous surface finish. The front in particular has developed a superbly timeworn appearance that gives the piece genuine country-house or old office character.

Today it would work beautifully as a letter and post organiser, desk tidy, receipt or document holder, or simply as an atmospheric piece of antique storage in a hallway, study, kitchen or home office.

Condition:

Good antique condition with substantial age-related wear and patination throughout. There are scratches, knocks, dark spotting, staining, colour variation and areas of worn old finish, particularly across the front and lower edges.small hardly noticeable corner missing These have deliberately been left untouched and form an important part of the rack's authentic antique character. Why we love it:

This is exactly the sort of useful antique that earns its place in a modern home. Still practical after well over a century, but with the beautifully imperfect surface and warmth that simply cannot be convincingly reproduced in a new piece.
