Antique Ravenscroft Law Wig Tin – Mr Justice Rogers – Lincoln’s Inn, London original late Victorian 19th century with original wig stand and 2 shirt buttons included reminents of an old label on the top could be removed personally I think it adds to the history and look!!

A wonderfully atmospheric antique black and gilt legal wig tin, made by Ravenscroft Law, Wig & Robe Makers, Lincoln’s Inn, London, and named in gilt lettering to “Mr Justice Rogers.”

This handsome tin was designed to house a judge’s or barrister’s wig, with its original shaped form, hinged lid, brass-toned fittings, carry handle, and removable internal tray/riser still present. The black japanned/toleware finish is beautifully aged, with gilt lettering and decorative flourishes giving it a strong courtroom presence.

Ravenscroft was one of the great names in British legal dress. Thomas Ravenscroft established a wig-making business at Lincoln’s Inn in the 18th century, and the Ravenscroft name later became part of Ede & Ravenscroft, the historic robe and wig makers associated with legal, academic and ceremonial dress. Ede & Ravenscroft is described by the Royal Warrant Holders Association as London’s oldest tailor and robe maker, established in 1689.

The name on the tin, Mr Justice Rogers, adds a particularly interesting layer of legal history. One strong possible association is The Hon Mr Justice Anthony Gordon Rogers, who was born in the UK, called to the English Bar in 1969, appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1984, joined the Hong Kong Judiciary as a High Court judge in 1993, and became a Justice of Appeal in 1997. He later served as Vice-President of the Court of Appeal of Hong Kong and retired in 2011.

Condition is antique and used, with surface wear, scuffs, scratches, small areas of paint loss, age-related marks and some wear to the gilt decoration, all consistent with practical legal use. The tin remains highly displayable and full of character. The wig is missing could be replaced
