Wax seals date back to ancient civilizations (Mesopotamia, Egypt) using clay/cylinders, with wax usage becoming common in the Middle Ages (13th-19th centuries) for authentication, security (tamper-evident), and as personal signatures before declining with gummed envelopes. Seals evolved from simple marks to elaborate crests/symbols, used by royalty, nobility, guilds, and eventually common people.
Wax Seal History Timeline
Ancient (c. 3300 BCE - Middle Ages): Early seals made from clay or stone using rings/cylinders in Indus Valley and Mesopotamia, mainly for authentication.
Middle Ages (c. 13th Century): Wax seals (beeswax/resin) became widespread across Europe for monarchs, nobles, clergy, monasteries, guilds, and even commoners due to illiteracy, serving as personal signatures/proof of identity.
17th-19th Century (Peak): "Great Age of Letter Writing" saw wax seals used to secure/authenticate private correspondence and formal documents, preventing forgery.
19th Century Onward: Use declined with the invention of the postage stamp and gummed envelopes, though they remain popular for decorative/formal purposes today.
