A beautiful antique Victorian desk top ink well holder in black lacquered papier-mâché, richly decorated with delicate mother-of-pearl floral inlay and gilt ornament. Elegant and decorative, this is a lovely example of 19th-century desk ware, made to sit proudly on a writing table or bureau.
The hinged sections open to reveal a fitted interior with spaces for ink wells and writing accessories. The red-lined square recesses would once have held the original ink pots, while the central compartment could be used for nibs, seals, or other small stationery pieces. Even without the original liners and fittings, it remains a wonderfully atmospheric piece with real period charm.
The top is especially attractive, with shimmering mother-of-pearl inlay arranged in floral sprays, while the front retains its ornate gilt decoration. It has the gentle wear you would expect from a genuine Victorian item, including rubbing, surface marks, and age-related loss to the finish, all of which add to its authentic character.
A striking antique desk accessory, ideal for display in a study, library, or on a collector’s desk.
Price: £125
I would place it around £125 to £145, and £125 feels the stronger selling price if the original glass ink pots are missing.
