Antique Victorian Carved Mother of Pearl Letter Opener Floral Desk Accessory

A beautifully decorative antique letter opener, crafted from genuine mother of pearl and measuring approximately 20.5cm long.

The piece has a broad, softly rounded paper-opening section with wonderful natural iridescence, flashing shades of gold, green and pink as it catches the light. The shaped handle is particularly attractive, carved with roses, leaves and branch-like detailing, and finished with a decorative crossguard-style collar.

Dating most likely from the mid to late 19th century, this elegant desk accessory is believed to be Continental European, possibly French. Its ornate naturalistic carving is reminiscent of decorative mother-of-pearl wares associated with the Palais Royal style, although there are no maker’s marks or provenance confirming a specific workshop.

Originally used for opening correspondence and separating the folded pages of books, it would now make a lovely addition to an antique desk collection, writing display, cabinet of curiosities or collection of mother-of-pearl objects.

Condition:

This is an antique piece with visible signs of age and use. There are chips and small losses around the broad rounded end, including a more noticeable loss to one corner. There is also wear and possible old repair or movement around the central join, together with surface marks, fine scratches and natural variation within the shell. Despite its age-related wear, it remains a charming and highly decorative survivor with particularly attractive carving and strong natural iridescence.
