Antique “The Handy” Stoneware Hot Water Muff Warmer — Gourdel, London (Reg. No. 508038)

Warm hands, warm heart! This charming cream stoneware muff-warmer — branded “The Handy” — was made by Gourdel, London in the early 1900s and would originally have been filled with hot water, then tucked discreetly inside a lady’s fur muff to keep her hands cosy while travelling or strolling outdoors.

Beautifully shaped with an angled spout and original hanging chain remains, the body is finished in a lovely crackled glaze that only decades of gentle use can create. The black transfer print shows the maker’s name along with Registered Design No. 508038, helping us date it to the early 20th century. A small hand motif also appears in the logo — a sweet nod to its practical purpose.

These pieces are now highly collectible — not only for their social history, but also because they make wonderful decorative objects in vintage bathrooms, dressing rooms, guest bedrooms and period cottages. It displays beautifully and has bags of character.

Lovely timeworn antique condition with: ✔ age-related glaze crazing throughout (typical & desirable in old stoneware)
