Fraud exposure: In 1905, the Bile Bean Manufacturing Company was sued in Scotland, and a court found the business was based on fraud.

Continued sales: Even after being exposed as a fraudulent product, Bile Beans continued to be sold widely in the UK and worldwide for decades.

Popularity: Their popularity was due to effective, widespread marketing and the fact that they acted as a laxative, which was believed to be a sign of good health before the creation of the National Health Service (NHS).
