Vintage 1930s “Black Boy” Pure Coffee Tin – ½ lb Ground Coffee Advertising Tin
Vintage 1930s “Black Boy” Pure Coffee Tin – ½ lb Ground Coffee Advertising Tin
A rare and historically significant vintage coffee tin, originally produced for “Black Boy” Finest Pure Coffee, containing ½ lb net of selected ground coffee. The tin measures approximately 8cm in diameter x 11cm high and features bold yellow and black lithographed advertising, with period brewing directions printed to the reverse.
This is a powerful piece of early 20th-century grocery and advertising history. Its design, typography and domestic coffee-making instructions place it firmly within the world of pre-war and interwar kitchen cupboards, grocers’ shelves and everyday household routines, when branded tins were used not only for storage but as striking visual advertising.
The tin is also an important reminder of the racialised imagery used in historic commercial packaging. The original brand name and illustration reflect attitudes and stereotypes of their period which are now rightly understood as offensive. It is offered here as a piece of social history and advertising ephemera, not as an endorsement of the imagery or language used.
The reverse of the tin gives wonderfully period instructions for preparing coffee in an earthenware jug: heating the vessel, adding ground coffee and boiling water, allowing it to stand, then straining into a warmed coffee pot. This small detail gives the piece a particularly evocative domestic quality, capturing a vanished ritual of household coffee-making before the age of instant coffee and modern machines.
Condition is very much part of the story. The tin shows heavy age-related wear, including surface rust, scratching, marks, oxidation, small dents, rim wear and losses to the printed surface. The lid has small pierced holes and signs of historic use or alteration. The graphics remain legible and the tin displays with strong character, but it is a timeworn collector’s piece rather than a pristine example.
A scarce and thought-provoking piece of vintage kitchenalia, best suited to collectors of early advertising tins, grocery packaging, coffee history, social history objects or period shop display.
