Vintage 1950s o.k sauce and chives jellies original print not reproduction!!!
Vintage 1950s o.k sauce and chives jellies original print not reproduction!!! This lovely print is an original from the 1950s. It has been lovingly mounted and sealed in a plastic cover to protect it ( pictures do not do it justice. I have not removed the plastic cover).
-
The print itself would look amazing in a period/ modern frame alternatively leave in mount.
-
Some age related wear. The poster is still very vibrant. See pictures for sizing etc

Chivers jellies have a rich history rooted in the Chivers family's jam and preserves business, which began in Histon, near Cambridge, in the early 19th century. The family started by growing fruit and selling it, but by 1873, they began making their own jams and marmalades. Chivers jellies were introduced in 1888, diversifying their product line beyond jams and marmalades.
Here's a more detailed look at the history:
Early Beginnings:
The Chivers family initially focused on market gardening and selling their produce.
Jam Production:
In 1873, they started producing jams and marmalades in a small barn.
Expansion:
The business grew, leading to the construction of a factory in 1875, which was later expanded.
Jellies Introduced:
Chivers began making table jellies in 1888, alongside other products like marmalade, custard powder, and lemonade.
Canning Innovation:
In 1894, Chivers became the first company in the country to can English fruits, according to the Cambridge Historian.
Growth and World War I:
By the early 20th century, Chivers was a leading manufacturer of preserves, and they supplied food to the allied armies during World War I.
Employee Welfare:
The Chivers family, known for their strong Baptist faith, implemented employee benefits such as a profit-sharing scheme (1891), a pension scheme (1895), and educational facilities.
Post-War Decline:
After World War II, Chivers faced challenges and eventually sold their farms and factories to Schweppes in 1959.
Legacy:
Despite the sale, Chivers remains known for its quality preserves and is still produced in Histon, Cambridge, and exported to various countries according to the company chiversusa.com.
OK Sauce, a British brown sauce, originated with George Mason & Co. in the early 20th century at their Chelsea Works factory. It was known for its rich flavor and quickly became popular in British cuisine. The brand was later acquired by Colman's. Its unique blend of ingredients, including fruits like mangoes, and a combination of spices, contributed to its distinctive taste.
Here's a more detailed look at its history:
Early Days:
George Mason & Co. was established in the late 19th century, initially producing products like beef and chicken extracts.
The Rise of OK Sauce:
OK Sauce was one of their early products, and it gained popularity for its unique flavor profile.
Percy Cooper's Role:
Percy Cooper, who started as a salesman for the company, played a key role in promoting and expanding the production of OK Sauce.
Factory Expansion:
Production was moved to larger premises at St. George's Hall in Walham Green, which was named the "Chelsea Works".
Competition and Acquisition:
In 1964, OK Sauce was acquired by Colman's, part of Reckitt & Colman Holdings.
Legacy:
Despite the change in ownership, OK Sauce remains a well-known condiment, particularly popular in British Chinese cuisine.
