Vintage 1950s Peek Frean Large Floral Biscuit Tin – Colourful Mid-Century Kitchenalia

A wonderfully decorative vintage Peek, Frean & Co. Ltd biscuit tin, dating to around the 1950s and covered from lid to base in an exuberant display of colourful flowers.

The large square tin features a wonderfully bold botanical design with masses of red, pink, blue, yellow, orange and white blooms set amongst rich green foliage. Against the dark background the colours really stand out, giving the tin an almost textile-like appearance and making it a particularly attractive piece of mid-century kitchenalia.

The underside retains the original Peek, Frean & Co. Ltd, London S.E.16, England manufacturer's mark together with the Royal Warrant-style crest and the wording:

“By Appointment to Her Majesty the Queen – Biscuit Manufacturers.”

Peek Frean was one of Britain's best-known biscuit manufacturers, established in London in 1857. Its enormous Bermondsey factory became such an important local employer that the surrounding district acquired the nickname “Biscuit Town.” Today, the company's surviving advertising, packaging and decorative tins have become collectable pieces of British social and commercial history.

Its generous size makes it useful as well as decorative – ideal for storing sewing materials, craft supplies, photographs, letters or household bits and pieces. It would also look fantastic displayed in a vintage kitchen, pantry or colourful maximalist interior.

Condition: Good vintage condition overall with bright, strong colours. There are age-related scratches, rubbing, small knocks and marks consistent with previous use. One upper corner/rim has been bent and creased, as shown clearly in the photographs, and the plain underside has surface scratching. The interior shows some normal signs of use. These imperfections form part of its history and do not detract significantly from its decorative appeal.
