There is something wonderfully intriguing about this piece. At first glance it is a beautifully made dark marbled box with a clean, practical form, but once opened it reveals its true purpose: a carefully compartmented teaching set filled with small printed cards arranged by sound combinations. It is a lovely survivor from the world of vintage educationalia and would make a particularly interesting addition for collectors of schoolroom antiques, early plastics, Bakelite, or unusual desk accessories.
.
This appears to be a vintage phonogram or phonics teaching card box, most likely dating to the mid-20th century, and probably made from Bakelite or a similar phenolic early plastic. Inside are multiple compartments holding cards printed with letter combinations and sound units such as oo, uu, ij and others, suggesting use in the teaching of reading, spelling, pronunciation or phonetic drills. It has the feel of a purposeful classroom or tutoring tool, designed for repeated sorting, matching and practice.
.
We particularly love the combination of form and function here. The box has a handsome, almost Art Deco simplicity, with its rich marbled colouring and neat fitted divisions, while the contents give it real character and curiosity. It is the sort of object that invites questions and would sit beautifully in a study, library, studio or collection of antique and vintage teaching materials.
.
The exact maker remains unknown, although the moulded monogram to the lid adds further charm and interest. It may have been part of a specialist educational system or language-learning method. Some of the card groupings suggest phonics or phonogram teaching, and possibly even a language-learning application beyond straightforward English reading instruction. We are therefore describing it carefully as a vintage educational phonics / phonogram card box.
.
Condition
In good vintage condition overall, with age-related wear consistent with use and storage over time. The box displays surface marks, light scratches, rubbing and minor scuffs as expected. The interior remains clean and well structured, and the hinged lid works as it should.
.
The set retains a quantity of original small teaching cards, though we have not checked completeness against any original contents list, and there are some blank cards present. Please study the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.

Approximate dimensions with box closed 25cm x 15cm x 5cm

Why we love it
A fascinating and unusual piece of educational history with real decorative appeal too — part schoolroom relic, part Bakelite collector’s piece, and part conversation starter.
